Former Greens leader Jeanette Fitzsimons is back, but this time defending her former parties stance on it’s policies regarding the use of 1080 poisons.

In a letter to the editor of a regional newspaper Mrs FitzSimons says their policies were the most precautionary of any party in parliament.

 

She says that the Greens policy was to avoid poisons in the environment  and had actively supported change but says the issues over pest eradication were simply not black and white.

The future of 15 Boer War rifles originally presented to the Thames Borough Council by the British Government in 1904 is to be considered by the next meeting of the Thames Community Board.

 

The rifles had been in the care of the Thames Museum Society until the Society resolved to sell 13 of them at public auction. Audio

Entry was free on Saturday and that makes a difference when your kid.

Whangamata Westpac Community Pools open day was full of wet kids with beaming smiles as they took to the water.

 

But Pool Committee Chairman John Cullen says that the pool has had a good season but it’s income has not been enough to cover its costs which now puts it’s future under a cloud.

 

Mr Cullen says that they are waiting to hear back about their applications to various trusts for funding

Thames District councilor Noel Hewlett was full of praise of the Tairua Hall Committee for dedication to retaining the Community Hall when he officially opened the annexe last week.

 

Mr Hewlett said that Tairua fights for what it wants and said he couldn’t believe that council could ever have decided to remove a hall of this stature.

 

The hall was initially used as the library and then 2 years ago the initial plan was to put it up for tender

And to get the retail sector in the right mood -A Festival of Speed window dressing competition starts mid week with judging on April the 8th

Mercury Bay Fishing reporter Rob Williscroft says that over the last week he says fisherman and boaties have been reporting some variable conditions off shore as a result of the Chilean Earthquake Audio.

 

And fishing competitions remain popular wiyth the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club having to put a limit on the number of entries that it waill take for this weeks trailer boat competition.

Founding Artist Dave Fowell says that this year they have had a lot of discerning people through and he says all the artists have reported good sales Audio

Today sees the start of Seaweek  and it’s theme is Fish for the future which will feature a series of free lectures and beach clean-ups around the Coromandel Peninsula

Environment Waikato’s Sam Stephens, coordinator of Seaweek  says "The theme is designed to stimulate discussion about what sustainable fishing means for us as New Zealanders," said which will officially run from today until 14 March

And youngsters are being encouraged to forward a 60 second pod cast into this station for broadcast on what the sea means to them, with the winners podcast being placed onto the TCDC website.

08/03/10 Mercury Bay Air Show

It was with a sigh of relief that organisors of Saturdays Air show awoke to clear skies above Mercury Bay.

A large crowd turned out to watch planes of all ages barrell rolling flying in formation, skydivers falling from the skies and helicopters racing cars.

One of the highlights for some apart from just being there was the addition of the Red Bull racing team who delighted the crowd with their aerial antics
